Heavy Rescue Team
The purpose of the Heavy Rescue Team is to respond to and mitigate incidents that involve the entrapment of person(s) in locations that require the use of specialized equipment, knowledge and skills to access and retrieve them. These incidents may include but are not limited to:
Trench Rescue Structural Collapse Confined Space Rescue High Angle Rescue
- Vehicle and Heavy Machinery Entrapment
Because these incidents are high risk in nature, team members are highly trained and certified to handle numerous situations that may occur. Operations at incidents must be handled in a rapid and safe manner, in accordance with local, state and federal laws that govern the safe operation in hazardous atmospheres.
The equipment needed for these operations is extensive. The West Jordan Heavy Rescue Team responds with two vehicles, which are currently stationed at Station 53 in Jordan Landing. The equipment is stored and transported on the Ladder Truck and a Heavy Rescue vehicle. Due to the significant nature of these rescues, the Heavy Rescue vehicle is also equipped with a command center to coordinate and direct operations. Because incidents of this nature are very labor intensive, we are supported by Station 55 personnel. These firefighters have also received specialized instruction and training to assist with scene operations. Other fire agencies and support vehicles may be called to the scene as support.
As technology advances, we are constantly updating methods and equipment to operate in the safest and most efficient manner possible. Continuous training and skill updates are required to remain constantly prepared for what we may encounter. Team members have and will continue to dedicate countless hours to the ongoing training that is required to stay prepared.
